Convergence of fixed and mobile services using IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)

TOPIC: Telecommunications
METHOD: A distance
LANGUAGE: Castilian
DURATION: From September 28 to November 06, 2009
DEADLINE: August 21 2009

CODE: 20090347MDIS

SPONSOR:

Organization of American States-OAS / Regional Training Center of the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL) yy Node Network of Excellence of the ITU: National Telecommunications Administration of Uruguay (ANTEL).

GENERAL OBJECTIVE:

• Understand the proposed framework on which to develop multiple applications, making it possible to enrich the user experience and offer the same services regardless of the access network which connects the terminal. Analyze the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and understand why it is recognized as the ideal technology for convergence of fixed and mobile services and how is the response of the telecommunications industry to develop a model of service which the various applications that will run with support independence and their interfaces are not standard. This course applies to the Graduate Center of Excellence NGN of ITU.

PROGRAM:

• Next Generation Networks (NGN) model according to ITU. Defining according to IMS 3GPP and 3GPP2.
• Using session initiation protocol (Session Initiation Protocol) for multimedia communications services.
• Requirements engineering for the development of NGN networks with quality equivalent to the circuit-switched networks.
• Concepts of emulation and simulation of the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
• Understanding the basic components of the architecture.
• Residential Subscriber Server (HSS): Features, interfaces and protocols that relate to the other components of the architecture.
• TISPAN architecture as fixed mobile convergence. Analysis of the distinctive elements of this architecture. Integration of networks based on NGN softswitch model TISPAN. Analysis of different versions of TISPAN.
• IMS and its application in support services on access networks, WiMAX, cable television networks (CATV), evolution of cellular networks and the 3rd and 4th generation. Case analysis.
• IPTV and IMS compatibility.
• Technological changes in the regulation of network interconnection by the use of IMS.
• IMS as a platform to develop convergent telecommunication applications. Analysis framework for application development that provides IMS.

METHODOLOGY:
The distance course will be held for five (5) weeks taught through the distance education platform for the ITU. The tutors met weekly to participants who joined the Web to: a) access to the session of the course, b) read support materials, c) download the exercises or activities that are allocated, d) complete or develop activities each week and e) post their answers so that the tutors can analyze, evaluate and clarify if you require. Moreover, the group returned to the weekly Tutores a consolidated analysis of their responses as well as the individual details and clarifications are necessary. The evaluation process is based on participation in the forum and a final exam.
Evaluation: The evaluation will consist of 2 parts, corresponding to the student's participation in the forum and work for the proposed end. The final grade is determined as follows:
• Approved with words: one who obtains a score greater than 90%.
• Approved: one who obtains a score between 60% and 90%.
• Not Approved: one who obtains a score below 60%.

BENEFITS: CITEL / OAS will cover the full cost of tuition for the selected candidates.

Certification: CITEL / OAS, the Center of Excellence for the Americas Region of the ITU and the National Telecommunications Administration (ANTEL) from Uruguay handed the participants a certificate (available in electronic form) for the completion and adoption of the course.
